Libya rebels control closest city to capital

Anti-government forces backed by rebel army troops were in control of the city closest to the capital Tripoli, The Associated Press reported on Sunday.
An AP reporter who arrived Sunday in Zawiya, 30 miles west of Tripoli, said forces loyal to longtime ruler Moammar Gadhafi are surrounding the city of 200,000. But anti-government rebels and troops allied with them are in control of the city center.
Police stations and government offices have been torched and anti-Gadhafi graffiti is everywhere. Many buildings in the city were pockmarked by bullet holes.
"Gadhafi Out," chanted hundreds in the city center, where army tanks controlled by rebels are deployed.
Gadhafi loyalists remained in control of Tripoli.

Provisional government Meanwhile, Libyan cities under rebel control reportedly appointed an ex-justice minister to lead a provisional government as the embattled Libyan regime armed its civilian supporters.
Gadhafi opponents named Mustafa Abdel-Jalil to the provisional leadership post, Fathi Baja, a member of the Benghazi city council said.

Abdel-Jalil was chosen by the committees running the eastern Libyan cities now in the rebellion's hands, Baja said.

On Saturday, Libya's top envoy to the U.S. also said Gadhafi opponents were rallying behind efforts to form an alternative government led by Abdel-Jalil, who has criticized Gadhafi's brutal crackdown on protesters.
It was not immediately clear how much support the proposed provisional leadership commands.
Meanwhile, President Barack Obama called on Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi to leave power immediately, saying he has lost the legitimacy to rule with his violent crackdown on his own people.
With that shift Saturday, Obama dropped the careful condemnation, threats of consequences and the reminders to Gadhafi's regime about its responsibility to avoid violence.

Cavs ship Williams, Moon to Clippers for Davis, pick

CLEVELAND -- The Cavaliers have reached a deal on the NBA's final day to make a trade. And if you're a fan of the team, this one will likely make you smile.

According to multiple reports and sources, the Cavs will send guard Mo Williams and forward Jamario Moon to the Los Angeles Clippers for guard Baron Davis and a 2011 first-round pick. One source close to the situation told FOXSportsOhio.com the trade was merely awaiting approval from the NBA as of early Thursday morning.

Teams have until 3 p.m. ET Thursday to complete trades.

This one will likely give the Cavs two lottery picks -- their own and that of the Clippers, provided the Clippers don't finish strong and make the playoffs. Based on records alone, the Cavs would possess the Nos. 1 and 8 picks in the draft if the season ended today. They also still possess their valuable $14.5 million trade exception.

The key to the deal, according to sources, was the Cavs' willingness to take on Davis' contract. He is due to make around $13.8 million next season and $14.8 million in 2012-13.

The deal was first reported by NBA.com and Yahoo! Sports.

Davis fell out of favor with Clippers owner Donald Sterling, who reportedly taunted Davis from the stands early in the season. Apparently, Sterling was disappointed with the underperforming point guard, who showed up to training camp overweight.

The Clippers are also reportedly so unimpressed with the upcoming draft class that they didn't mind surrendering the draft pick to rid themselves of Davis.

Davis turns 32 in April, and despite the injury issues and inconsistencies of recent seasons, the Cavs were willing to absorb his contract to obtain another first-rounder. He is averaging 12.8 points and 7.0 assists in 43 games this season.

Meanwhile, the 28-year old Williams has played in 36 games and is scoring 13.3 points per with 7.1 assists. He too has suffered an assortment of injuries this season and given mostly uneven performances.

Williams is owed $8.5 million in each of the next two seasons. Both years consist of player options that would allow him to become a free agent.

Neither Davis nor Williams played Wednesday night. Davis sat out the Clippers' loss to New Orleans with swelling in his left knee, and Williams missed the Cavs' loss to Houston with a sprained right ankle.

Moon, 30, is averaging 4.6 points and 2.8 rebounds, and lost his starting small forward spot to rookie swingman Christian Eyenga.

The trade is the first major one for Cavs first-year general manager Chris Grant, who replaced Danny Ferry this past summer. Earlier in the week, Grant scheduled a Thursday afternoon news conference to discuss the team's moves.

Multiple sources said the Cavs might also still deal guard Anthony Parker before the deadline, although none of the sources were certain where Parker would go or what he might bring in return.

Davis played for Cavs coach Byron Scott during the 2004-05 season in New Orleans, before the Hornets traded him to Golden State after 18 games.

Arsenal 1-0 Stoke City

Arsenal moved a point behind Manchester United at the top of the Premier League with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Stoke at Emirates Stadium.
Sebastien Squillaci's eighth-minute header gave Arsenal the victory but injuries to Theo Walcott and Cesc Fabregas will be of concern with the Carling Cup final and a Champions League match against Barcelona coming up.
Fabregas came off with what appeared to be a knee complaint in the first half while Walcott was carried off on a stretcher with an ankle injury after a Dean Whitehead challenge, which went unpunished.

Much of the pre-match talk had been about how the Gunners would cope without another of their key men, Robin van Persie, who was ruled out on Tuesday with a hamstring injury.
Arsene Wenger chose Nicklas Bendtner to lead the attack in his absence while Fabregas, Wojciech Szczesny and Samir Nasri returned after missing Sunday's disappointing draw with Leyton Orient.
Tony Pulis recalled Asmir Begovic and Whitehead while Ryan Shawcross skippered the side almost a year to the day the that his challenge led to Aaron Ramsey's broken leg at the Britannia Stadium.
Clearly determined to put their shock FA Cup draw behind them, Arsenal came flying out of the blocks and rattled the Stoke woodwork with barely a minute gone.
Fabregas slotted in Walcott after some good work by Jack Wilshere, and the England winger beat Begovic at the far post but saw his shot rebound off the woodwork and into the goalkeeper's hands.
Walcott tore into the Stoke box again three minutes later after being played through by Bendtner but Begovic came out to smother the ball.
The early pressure paid off for the home side when they took the lead in the eighth minute. Bendtner volleyed across the box from a Wilshere corner to find Squillaci, who headed home unmarked from five yards for his first league goal of the season.
However, Arsenal suffered a blow 14 minutes in when Fabregas, who looked to be struggling with a knee injury, asked to be withdrawn. He was replaced by Andrey Arshavin.
Fabregas, who missed most of December with a hamstring injury, will be badly missed by the Gunners if does not recover for Sunday's cup final and the Barcelona game in two weeks' time.
Arsenal remained in control for much of the first half but played the game at a much slower pace following their captain's departure.
Arshavin, who scored the winner against Barcelona last week, skipped past his marker before drawing a good save from Begovic at his near post but it was Szczesny making the stop of the game at the other end when he had to scramble down to his right to save John Carew's 25-yard volley.
Nasri curled a free-kick a couple of yards wide of Begovic's goal after Shawcross had brought down Arshavin 20 yards out before the first booking was shown on Jonathan Walters for a pull on Walcott.
The decision angered Pulis and his players, who had just seen Squillaci go unpunished for a similar challenge.
Stoke almost equalised at the start of the second half when Shawcross' header was deflected just wide by Djourou after Jermaine Pennant had crossed from Delap's short throw.
Stoke were looking much more threatening than they had done in the first half and they went close again when Robert Huth headed just over the bar from a Delap long throw this time.
However Arsenal then went on the attack through Arshavin, who dodged a Shawcross sliding tackle to find Walcott in the box, but the 21-year-old was off-balance and mis-kicked his attempt on goal under pressure from Huth.
Walcott was bundled over by Whitehead on the edge of box in the 68th minute but referee Peter Walton waved play on. However, the winger stayed on the ground, clutching his ankle, before being carried off to be replaced by Denilson.
Bendtner headed wide from six yards after a Wilshere corner as Arsenal looked for a killer second goal with 20 minutes left but Pennant almost stole an equaliser in the last minute of normal time with a beautiful curling free-kick that went into Szczesny's side-netting.
Wenger was infuriated to see the fourth official show there would be five minutes of injury-time but his side held the ball for almost the entire added period to ensure the Gunners held out for a crucial win.

Vela rescues point for West Brom against Wolves

WEST BROMWICH, England (AP)—Carlos Vela scored his first goal for West Bromwich Albion in stoppage time Sunday to earn a 1-1 draw against relegation rival Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The Mexico striker, who is on loan from Arsenal, netted the rebound after James Morrison’s shot was spilled by Wayne Hennessey.

“(Vela) did very, very well—he’s very interesting,” West Brom coach Roy Hodgson said. “The Arsenal don’t make mistakes with talents they sign.
“He’s been a bit unlucky at Arsenal from what I can understand, in terms of injuries. He is a good loan signing for West Brom and he looked lively and scored a goal. OK, it was from a rebound and you could say, ‘Anyone can score that’—but that’s not my experience. You need to be a goal-scorer to be in the right position.”

The goal denied Jamie O’Hara, who is on loan at Wolves from Arsenal’s north London rival Tottenham, from securing three points with his first strike for the club. The English midfielder curled a 20-meter (yard) shot past Boaz Myhill in the 39th minute.

While Wolves remain bottom of the Premier League, West Brom are a point and a place clear of the drop zone after Hodgson’s first game in charge.

“We laid siege for long periods on the Wolves goal, but we know they defend well,” Hodgson said. “They are not an easy team to break down, even harder when they get the one-goal lead … the performance told me there is fighting spirit amongst them, that there is a lot of determination and character.”

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy wouldn’t criticize Hennessey for the late mistake that led to the equalizer.

“It is a bobbly old pitch,” McCarthy said. “I don’t know whether Wayne should have got it and kept it, but he has been brilliant for us. He has been fabulous.

“I thought we could have got a block on the original shot. Overall the performance was good. We had a really good spell second half when we should have got an other goal.”

Showbuzzzzzzz - How the Kardashians Made $65 Million Last Year

Ka-ching — it's the Kardashians!

The new issue of The Hollywood Reporter goes in depth with Kardashian mom and manager Kris Jenner about the inventive — and controversial — ways she's monetized reality fame for her family since their arrival on E! in 2007.

Last year, THR reveals, the tightknit family made more money than what Angelina Jolie, Sandra Bullock, and Tom Cruise are estimated to have earned combined: a staggering $65 million (a source close to the family confirms the figure).

Below, a round-up of the shocking amounts of money they've scored:

- The family splits a six-figure paycheck per E! episode. The shows might provide a steady paycheck, but their larger purpose is to serve as a marketing platform for their endorsements and best-selling products, which include book, fragrance and clothing lines. "These shows are a 30-minute commercial," admits Khloé, co-star of the first spinoff, "Kourtney & Khloé Take Miami," which focused on the opening of a Florida outpost of their clothing store, Dash.

- Kim now charges as much as $25,000 to simply mention and link to a brand or company in a tweet. It's so effective a tool that businesses have begun including Twitter clauses in their contracts with the family, committing the girls to a set number of tweets about their product.

- Kim commands a personal appearance fee of $100,000 to $250,000 per event, and can even demand up to $1 million internationally, according to a high-profile talent wrangler. It's been rumored that she signed a seven-figure deal with a Las Vegas club owner for a handful of 2011 appearances. (Kris will not confirm.) "Kim sells," a nightlife source says.

Heat got Cold meeting Celtics

Check the best Odds by clicking  12bet.com

"They are the defending Eastern Conference champions. You have to go through them, and they ain't going to make it easy," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "We understand that this isn't going to be an easy ride for us, and that's where we're at our best."
The Heat eliminated most of a 13-point fourth-quarter deficit and trailed 83-81 with 19 seconds left when they brought the ball in from a timeout and got it to James at the top of the key. He drove on Paul Pierce and drew the foul but missed the first shot, then made the second.
On the ensuing inbound pass, James went into the stands for the ball but merely knocked it to Ray Allen; the Celtics got the ball downcourt to Glen "Big Baby" Davis, who was fouled. Davis hit both foul shots with 6.3 seconds to go, and Mike Miller missed a 3-point attempt in the final seconds that would have sent the game to overtime.
"They're going to be a different team in March and April, the more important months, when we'll probably have to see them again," said Paul Pierce, who was 0-for-10 from the floor and scored just one point. "It gives us the series in case something happens with a tiebreaker."
The Celtics have won 12 of the last 13 games against Miami, including a 4-1 series victory in the first round of last year's playoffs; they then knocked James and the Cleveland Cavaliers out in the next round. James fled to Miami to join Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade, but the Heat still haven't been able to beat Boston.

This is classic, typical bigger brothers," Wade said. "You've got to get over the hump. We're getting closer and closer, but we're not there yet. It can happen at any time. It can happen in the playoffs."
Bosh scored 24 with 10 rebounds and James had 22 points for Miami, which had won eight in a row.
Kevin Garnett scored 19 with seven rebounds and Kendrick Perkins had a season-high 15 points for Boston, which snapped a two-game losing streak. Rondo had 11 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds while bothering James enough to force him into four first-half turnovers.
"I thought Rondo just willed us the game," coach Doc Rivers said. "Rondo just took it upon himself that whoever was bringing the ball up he was going to guard and harass. And I thought that changed the game for us."
Pierce had his lowest scoring total since 1999. He said afterward he was bothered by hand and foot injuries and would have an MRI on his left foot Monday.
Miami took a 43-39 lead into halftime, but Boston scored 12 of the first 13 points in the third quarter and opened a seven-point lead on Allen's 3-pointer with 8:31 left. After Wade drove for a layup, Allen hit a 15-footer and Wade was called for a flagrant foul for elbowing Garnett while fighting for position.
While the referees discussed it, the Heat gathered on the court and Rondo lingered outside their huddle until James pushed him away. Allen intervened to pull Rondo away.
Garnett made both free throws, giving the Celtics a 59-46 lead. In all, Boston outscored the Heat 20-3 in the first 5:17 of the third quarter, hitting its first seven shots.
"We definitely dug ourselves a hole," James said. "We can't expect to come into Boston and turn the ball over 12 times in the first half. We also can't afford to come in in the third quarter and not have our motor going and let them go on a 20-3 run to start the quarter. I feel 10 times out of 10 you're going to lose those games."
Game notes
Davis could only chuckle after taking the ball on the breakaway but leaving his dunk on the front of the rim. He then turned around and ran over Bosh for a foul. ... Allen was presented with the game ball from Thursday night, when he set the NBA's career 3-point record. Allen had two more 3s on Sunday to give him 2,564 in his career, four more than Reggie Miller. ... Pierce was 0-for-5 from 3-point range. He made one of two free throws. ... Boston has not lost three straight games all season.

Liverpool win ruins Torres' debut

Get the best odds @ 12BET.com!!

By Rob Harris

Liverpool's recovery under Kenny Dalglish reached a new high Sunday with a 1-0 victory at Chelsea as former Reds striker Fernando Torres failed to make an impact on his debut for the London club.
Chelsea's celebrations at snatching Torres from Anfield for 50 million pounds on Monday were muted by Liverpool's $18 million midfielder, Raul Meireles, scoring the winning goal.
Meireles, who arrived from FC Porto in August, hit a fourth goal in five games in the 69th minute after Steven Gerrard's cross was missed by Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech and defender Branislav Ivanovic.
"Raul Meireles is in a real rich vein of form at the moment," Dalglish said. "The wee man gets up in support in the box and has great technique."
The goal helped to spare some of Maxi Rodriguez's earlier embarrassment after the Argentina winger fluffed his connection with Gerrard's pass and hit the crossbar when he had an open net.
Torres was limited to just two meaningful goalward efforts during 66 minutes on the pitch, with an early long-range strike going high into the stands and another shot blocked by former teammate Jamie Carragher.
"We have to give Fernando time to adjust to the shape (of the team)," Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti said. "He has experience, he has confidence, he didn't show problems before the game."
While Liverpool's traveling fans taunted Torres with banners and chants, Dalglish was in no mood for gloating.
"I'm not here to talk about someone else's player," said the manager, who has returned to the Liverpool job after 20 years. "I'm here to talk about my own players."
Those players, who were battling relegation when Dalglish was hired a month ago, are now in contention for Europa League qualification.
The 18-time champions have won their last four matches without conceding a goal and are six points behind Chelsea, which is fourth in the final Champions League spot.
When Dalglish replaced Roy Hodgson, Liverpool was four points above the relegation zone after its worst start for more than 50 years. Now the players want American owner John Henry to extend Dalglish's contract beyond the end of the season
"As a club and as players we didn't do enough to help the manager (Hodgson) out - the performances weren't good enough and obviously the managers take the brunt of it," Carragher said. "Things have improved now and Kenny coming has got everyone onside ... for everyone, especially me and Stevie (Gerrard), he's a hero to us. The results are obviously going very well."
Chelsea had also hoped to secure a fourth straight league win on Sunday after Torres was signed to reinvigorate its title defence.
But the Blues remain fourth - 10 points behind leader Manchester United, which lost for the first time this season at Wolverhampton on Sunday.
"We have to try to fight again for the title," Ancelotti said. "It could happen that United can lose again. Every team can lose."
Chelsea was denied a late penalty when Ivanovic tumbled under Glen Johnson's shoulder-charge.
"It was a penalty, but we didn't play well," Ancelotti said. "We were not good enough to win this game. They defended very well and we were not able to find the right space to attack."
While Torres was rushed into action by Ancelotti, his Anfield replacements didn't play at Stamford Bridge.
Andy Carroll is still recovering from injury and Dalglish resisted handing a second appearance to unused substitute Luis Suarez, despite the Uruguayan netting Thursday in a win over Stoke.
Dirk Kuyt was handed the lone striking role, supported by Meireles and Gerrard.
"Suarez is a fantastic footballer, he got off to a great start, and we're looking forward to him getting in the team on a regular basis," Dalglish said. "It's correct he gets some time to bed down."
Carragher's crucial diving block to thwart Torres from Didier Drogba's cross came on the 33-year-old central defender's first appearance since sustaining a shoulder injury on Nov. 28.
"It's like getting another player in," Dalglish said. "It's great credit to his level of fitness, even at his age. He's not a teenager any more... he won't be feeling as good tomorrow, perhaps, but it was great to have him pushing people into position, talking and encouraging."
