Snooker Update - Marco Fu
Hong Kong’s Marco Fu admits that winning the recent snooker individual gold medal at the Asian Games in Guangzhou in China was one of the highlights of his career.
The world No15 suffered a massive disappointment on Tuesday in Telford, England when he lost 9-2 to Stuart Bingham in the 12BET.com UK Championship.
Fu, a former Grand Prix winner and UK finalist two years ago, was never in the match against the man bursting with confidence after beating Ronnie O’Sullivan a round earlier.
But afterwards Fu recalled one of his proudest moments last month when he prevented Ding from winning a third straight gold for China with a 4-2 victory in the final.
Fu, 32, said: “It was an amazing achievement, the Asian Games is a very important tournament for us, and sometimes people on the snooker circuit who have not been there do not realise that.
“It is only held every four years, so the chance to win a gold medal for your country does not come along very often, and it is totally different to normal matches when you are only playing for yourself.
“It is a great honour to win anything for your country. I was able to drive there, it is only about 100 miles away from Hong Kong and took me three hours.
“We hear that this may be the last time cuesports are included in the Asian Games, so I knew it could be my last chance to win it.
“I suppose I could be the last ever man to win the gold medal for snooker, I had never really thought about it.
“They sold extra tickets on the last few days and the atmosphere was amazing, playing Ding in front of a crowd in his home country was incredible and very special.”
